Tin Can Bay Fishing Club

March 2026

Hello there,

Finally, some cracker days to get out on the water, and some nice fish to show for it. The club’s Tag a Long up to Kauri Crk wasn’t too bad of a day but we were staying in the creek, so the wind wasn’t a factor although there were a few heavy scuds came through giving us a substantial shower. Not to be deterred, the best fish of the day was taken by Sel Potter with a 63cm Flathead and Lester Cross with a very nice Cod, Mal Kay with a feed of good quality Whiting and the team of Barry Nalder and Paul Box boating some nice Flathead best coming in at 60cm. Pretty good day all round. The next Tag a Long will be to Big Tuan Creek on the 9th May if you are interested contact Chris at The Chandlery and so a report for that event will be in next month’s publication.  The two-day competition for March was won by Sel Potter with a bag of four very nice lure caught Flathead best coming in at 67cm and a 65, 62 and a 60 for that bag, second was Barry Nalder with a nice Salmon to tick off another species off the bucket list. Junior fisho of the month was Eli Morrison with a good haul of quality Mangrove Jack best being a 47cm, well done Eli and Selwyn. Our master Caster for the month of March was Ian Smith.

Some nice fish have been boated this week with Mr Consistency, Malcolm Kay landing some quality Gold Band Snapper, Nannygai, Sweetlip and Snapper on a recent trip over the bar. I also heard from a little bird that the professor Ron Cox has been harassing the Cod again in the local area so hopefully I can obtain some pics to verify and share.

We held our monthly workshop with the subject being a lifetime of fishing presented by Ron Cox with a pictorial account from all over the country focusing mostly on Queensland’s coast. Some great fish and some terrific experiences shared. I am still flabber gasted by the size of some of the fish in the pics.   Thankyou Ron it was a great night. On the social side of things our club visited Tin Topia restaurant at Tin Can Bay where some great food and no doubt tall tales shared around the table. The next lunch will be at the Tin Can Bay Country Club on 22nd April  so hopefully some pics of that will be available for next month.

The next workshop was on the 23rd April and presented by Don Grant from the Hervey Bay Amateur Fishing Club and some pics of the night and report for that will be forthcoming. Over the following weekend 24,25 and 26th April our club will be hosting The Hervey Bay Fishing Club as we do each year, and this kicks off with a welcoming BBQ and interclub Master Caster competition on the evening of the 24th so some pics and a full rundown next issue.

On the weekend of the 18th and 19th April some of our club members are competing in the Pirtek Challenge which is an Australia wide fishing competition with proceeds going to Motor Neurone Disease and the Prostate Foundation. This is a terrific event to be involved in and we wish the club members competing, all the success they can obtain. Look out for this event each year and get behind these great causes.

On a more sombre note, our club came together with the family of our mate Derek Andrews to celebrate the life of an outstanding club member, a real character and a great mate. Our thoughts and best wishes are with Derek’s wife Toni and his family. A Memorial Plaque was erected in the clubhouse and a Perpetual Trophy named in his honour. “Long story short” you may not be with us but you will never be forgotten.
