Hello all,
Well last month was very quiet, fishing wise that is, to say the least and 2 trips our club was looking forward to were literally washed away due to the rain events and very windy conditions. These were the Baffle Creek trip and the Kayak Day from Crab Creek. However, some still braved the elements and some nice fish still managed to be landed and released. Highest point scoring fish for the month of February was a 67cm lure caught Flathead wrangled by our own professor Ron Cox followed very closely by Chris Rippon with a 71cm Saratoga. Nicely done guys. The two-day competition was held in very “ordinary “conditions and believe me at times it would have blown a dog off a chain out there and thank goodness for quality wet weather gear coming home. Anyway, the winner was yours truly, Barry Nalder with a bag of Bream and Whiting (all released) oh well it was an experience is all I can say to that. The beach fishing trip at Teewah Beach was also a washout and I believe there were little to no fish caught there either, oh well there’s always next time. Our Master Casta for this month was Ron Cox who showed us again why we all need to practice more.
Since then, Chris Rippon has been out in some less that pleasant weather and still managed to bag yet another salty Barramundi this one coming in at 104cm. Nice to see metre plus Barra caught local and released to fight another day. Great job Chris. I think Chris was the only one brave enough to venture out because I haven’t seen any other reports from any club members. Our clubs weighmaster, Selwyn Potter ventured away from the area for some heavy duty fishing across the country and managed to land some cracker Spanish Mackerel, Jew fish and assorted reef species topping it off with some quality Squid and Blue Swimmer crabs making the trip quite memorable.
In February we held another of our workshops with the topic being Flathead, we discussed fishing for them with lures or bait, gear used ie rods and reels and lure types and plastic types and also the handling of fish prior to release. This was a successful night in my opinion, and all enjoyed the two-way experience sharing which goes towards lifting everybody’s skill level. We try to promote the sharing of knowledge rather than one person’s opinion and this works very well.
As this article goes to print, we have two events upon us with another tag along scheduled this time to Kauri Creek, and to date 6 boats have indicated their attendance so more on that next month. Also, we have another workshop planned with this month’s subject being a lifetime of fishing in this region presented in photos and tales by Ron Cox which should be an excellent night, again I will cover this off more in next month’s update.
Coming months will bring some fun times (weather permitting) with 2 Teewah Beach fishing days and the regular two- day competition planned for April. May will also see another tag along trip to Big Tuan Creek followed by another of our Junior Fishing Days at Norman Point so watch the social media site and members check your activity sheets for details. If you are around the Tin Can Bay Markets, drop by the club marquee and say hello to our tireless workers and spin the wheel.
I’m sorry it’s another short and sweet report but if we can’t get out then we need to take it up with the weather gods.
For any further details on our club you can contact us through the website tincanbayfishingclub.com.au or contact us on the club’s mobile number 0437242171.
Cheers
Barry Nalder
