Tin Can Bay Fishing Club

 Gday all,

It seems weather is the topic most months but unfortunately it plays a big party of our hobby and yet again there has been some really mixed days. None more so that our monthly 2 day fishing competition where old mate “Huey” sent the rain and wind just in time but still didn’t chase away all the fish, just the entrants and all I can say is thank goodness for a good bilge pump and wet weather gear. This month’s winner of the competition was Barry Nalder with a bag of good-sized Whiting and a 69cm Flattie to add to the score. The Flathead also gave him the largest fish for the month. Our junior fisho for the last 2 months was young Eli Morrison, a terrific effort, great job matey.  The Master Caster this month went to Janeen Henricksen showing some class with her efforts by taking out the gong and showing the rest of us how it’s done.

We held another tag along trip this time up to Big Tuan Crk. It was a neap tide and as they say “no run no fun” yet we still managed some quality fish. Some of the catches were Ian and Wendy Smith with some Bream, Trevor Henricksen’s crew managed to boat a nice Black Spot Cod, good sized Blubberlip and some Flathead and their fair share of Toads. Mal and Noela Kay with some Bream and a good Mud Crab (who was invited home for dinner) and the crew of Kevin Armstrong and Barry Nalder boating 6 or 7 good flatties, a Queenfish and some nice Whiting. Overall, it is a pretty long waterway for this area and most hadn’t fished it before, lots of sand bars and rock bars but definitely well worth returning to on a better tide. Also, when the wind allows, the channel from the ramp out into the straits looks promising.  I think I speak for all and say it was a great day out and it’s terrific to see our new members coming along.

Beach fishing at Teewah Beach didn’t eventuate due to the “ordinary” weather.

The popular shed workshops were held again and for this month it was a general talk on targeting Whiting and Mangrove Jack, facilitated by Barry Nalder but really it was a shared experience with everybody sharing their techniques, rigs and gear for these species. Next month’s workshop will be on targeting Squid and will be facilitated by Jon Constable. This workshop will be quite timely as the club’s Big Squid Week is later in the month and is scheduled again for July.

A big shout out must go to our fun raising crews who, along with our sponsors, do a smashing job keeping our club liquid, so thankyou to Chris Murphy and Rita Leong our Bunnings co-ordinators and Jeff and Elaine Prout for the market stall each month. Thankyou guys.

As this article goes to print our club is co-ordinating with the Tin Can Bay State School and participating in 2 separate fishing days as part of the school’s activities and I’ll have some pics and more about these days for next months article.

Not a lot more eventuated over the month but when the wind blows the boats don’t go (most times anyway) so thanks for reading and see y’all next month.

Tight lines and good times

Barry Nalder
